Bombshell
What America has truly become for us and the messy ways of how the truth, yourself, and sex sells. Bombshell sheds light on the #Metoo movement and how powerful it can be.
(Left to right) Charlize Theron (Megyn Kelly), Nicole Kidman (Gretchen Carlson), and Margot Robbie (Kayla Pospisil) share indirect ups and downs as they try to make strides while working for Fox Network.
“How you treat people who disagree with you says everything about you “
Bombshell can be seen as a slap in the face to wake up the people who have yet to understand the amounts of stress women involved in politics and media constantly go through. This compelling story displayed just how close your allies can be in the face of despair and the empowerment of the #MeToo movement. Bombshell may not have been on your list of movies to see for the end of 2019, but add it to your must watch next time you see a trending incident in the news based around the scandal of harassment or if you feel you have truths unspoken due to fear or lack of hope that it will change anything.
Moving up in a workplace is usually a sign of recognition for hard work, diligence, and loyalty to a place of business. For Gretchen Carlson, to move up at Fox network it was going to take accepting sexual advances Roger Ailes. Her taking a leap of faith and initiating a law suit against the Fox founder for sexual harassment, opened doors for many other women in the work place who were in similar situations with him. Soon after , Fox News reporter, Megyn Kelly, brings her own story to the table enabling the movement that eventually was brought to the attention of the people.
Director Jay Roach lured this film with dramatic close ups and constant camera movement to the subject at matter much like a sitcom. This helped us gain the focus as scenes were shot out like arrows showing the arrogance of the Republican Party for the 2016 presidential race. We follow three stories, Megyn kelly (Charlize Theron), Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman), and Kayla Pospisil (Margot Robbie), disposing the similarities of motions they are going through and how it leads up to them being allies. Each are thrown around for their beliefs or disbelief at the Fox Network by the CEO, Roger Ailes. We know how most of these stories end , but it is the premise of understanding what happened here and the fight against the silence. Roger Ailes paid the consequences for using his power to influence lust through broken promises of better job placement.
Bombshell isn’t entirely an enjoyable film and some could consider it the little sister to 2018’s Vice, the Dick Cheney story. With poor promo, a predictable story, and a powerful message, bombshell scores a 6/10 and if it’s ever randomly on one of the movie channel’s, it might be worth the watch. Although I must say, after a decade of scandals being brought to light constantly, this was released at the best time.
Lastly, After seeing this film, I find myself quietly waiting for the catastrophic ways of the male gender, based on the few who have acted poorly towards women, to enervate so we can be seen beautiful again, protective, and trustworthy. This country has always been seen as divided, but never have I seen it become predator and prey. The trust women hold is slowly diminishing, where these things were normally joked about...it is gradually becoming less funny, and more darker. I question those around me who have these dark thoughts and prey on others, I wonder what they believe in and what it means to them.
