Nobody
Conformity is the enemy and “Nobody” has a lot to say about it.
Bob Odenkirk stars as “Hutch Mansell” the nobody we’ve all been waiting for.
Let’s get right to it and paint the picture for you. It’s a Monday night, you just got off work, a job you hate, and your family isn’t exactly thrilled to see you. You woke up at 5am to workout, you eat the same breakfast everyday, you take the overly crowded bus to work every morning, your spouse hardly notices you and your hard work, you’re tired, and even worse, you punch numbers for a metal fabrication company owned by your father-in-law. By the way, your spouse sleeps with a pillow between the two of you every night, they’ve pretty much given up on intimacy with you. If this is you, then you might want to meet Hutch Mansell (Played by Bob Odenkirk), a man who lives this life and hides a wilder one. We’ve all felt or thought of the crippling lack of verve provided by working a 9-5 shift and living in a suburban home with a wife and kids. That would make anyone want to lose their mind and want to just break free and get revenge on a society that has imprisoned you to a routine for the sake of a dollar. But who would openly CHOOSE this life? In this movie, only a man who has a life of danger to leave behind.
One night, two burglars break into the Mansell family home and awakens Hutch while searching for valuables to steal. When Hutch wakes up to take them on, he is shortly accompanied by his son who jumps down the stairs on to one of the burglars. When the other one is distracted and hesitant to shoot the son, Hutch has a clean swing available to hit the burglar off guard, but doesn’t take the swing and gives into their demands. The minimal respect his son had for him drops even more and once the cops arrive they antagonize him further with what they would have done in the situation. His daughter is the only one that believes in him and fulfills the “Daddy’s little girl” role, but everything changes when he discovers her Kitty Cat bracelet has been stolen. Hutch goes through the entire town searching for information on the burglars which creates a series of events that irks him more and more to exposing the real side of him, otherwise known as, the auditor. While kicking everyone’s ass and swiping a metro card, we really diverge away from the fact that Hutch Mansell is just like you and I on the surface.
Why does everybody burn money in movies?
This ordinary guy flips the script so fast as we discover he’s a force to be reckoned with and possesses the famous ability we all known as “Dad strength”. This movie is even more thrilling because it’s from the same writers of John Wick, you know, the boogeyman? So we are left to believe that Hutch Mansell and John Wick exist in the same universe. This reminds me of David Dunn (Unbreakable) and Kevin Crumb (Split) meeting in M. Night Shyamalan’s eastrail 177 trilogy. Is it possible we will see John Wick vs Hutch Mansell, and if so, who do you have as a winner? Nobody versus The Boogeyman is something I’d pay to see. “Nobody” follows the blueprint of John Wick, but this time there are hidden gems that make this movie just so watchable and surprising. Oh and by the way, Bob Odenkirk put in 2.5 years of training for this role and it is paying off!
Hutch Mansell and John Wick reside in the same cinematic universe and have the same problem, the Russians.
A plethora of greatly assembled fight scenes reminds you of the eerie beauty of how being normal really is our strong suit at times. Hutch Mansell isn’t the greatest fighter or marksman at shooting but he is a Jack of all trades which makes him an absolute threat. He lives up to the nobody name and the magic behind it is that he doesn’t want this life, he wants the life with his family! This is what makes him able to go toe to toe with John Wick, being durable and smart. The only downfall about Nobody is how it leaves us with so many questions. The movie is truly shallow which in this case, we all hope there is a “Nobody” sequel we can be expecting but other than that, there’s hundreds of questions to be answered. But to make up for that we get superb acting and fighting done by the star of “Better call Saul” joined with the likes of people like Christopher Lloyd and The RZA, oddly paired cast that fits perfect in my opinion.

Throw in the fact that the music selection and comedic snippets in this movie make it all worth the while as we come back to movie theaters after a pandemic, Nobody perfectly executes a good story line and scores a 7.5/10 on the Lance Reviews scale. Although the plot is Swiss cheese, it makes you want more, and that is the kind of thing a movie should do. Hutch Mansell is all of us, trying to break free from our ordinary lives and get back to who we were, but unfortunately, not all of us have a past of being a badass auditor.
This movie could be listed under “Greatest hits” if it decides to further the plot with a sequel.
